Easy Banana Sushi Recipe for Fun Snacks

Updated February 2026

At a Glance

Banana sushi is a quick, easy, and tasty snack that kids will love. It’s made by peeling a ripe banana and wrapping it around a tortilla spread with peanut butter. The banana is then rolled and cut into “sushi rolls”. This healthy snack can be modified depending on tastes and dietary preferences.

Banana Sushi Rolls

Ideal for easy snacks, low-sugar desserts, or when you simply want a quick bite, try these banana sushi rolls. Beloved by adults and kids alike, they’re as fun to make as they are to eat. Wholesome and nutritious, customize these sushi rolls however you’d like with different spreads, toppings, and more. Perfect for lunch boxes, after-school snacks, or between-meal cravings.

Ingredients for Banana Sushi Rolls

Tortilla: For banana sushi, you’ll want a large tortilla that can cover the length of the banana. We chose our Farm Boy™ Whole Wheat Tortilla for this recipe. 10 inches in diameter, it has plenty of space for you to work with. Each tortilla has six grams of protein and four grams of fibre, helping keep you (or the kiddos) feeling fuller longer.

Nut/Seed Butter: Farm Boy™ Cashew Butter is the spread we used for this healthy snack. However, if you have an aversion to cashews or simply don’t like the taste, you can always choose classic peanut butter instead. Our Crunchy All Natural Peanut Butter and Creamy All Natural Peanut Butter are both only made with one ingredient: dry roasted peanuts. That means no added oils, salt, or sugars. You can also try Farm Boy™ Almond Butter.

If you or your little one is allergic to nuts, we have a solution! Choose a seed butter instead, like Farm Boy™ Sunflower Seed Butter, made from Canadian sunflower seeds. Any nut butter or seed butter works great in this easy recipe.

Chocolate Spread: Chocolate may not be the healthiest food, but we like it for a little extra sweetness in this snack. (You can omit it if you prefer, or simply use less according to your taste.) Our Chocolate Hazelnut Spread is a great option to add some cocoa flavour to this easy snack.

Hemp Hearts: Hemp hearts are an excellent way to get some added nutrition into little ones. They contain protein, fibre, vitamins, and minerals, and can contribute to better heart health. We like to call these “sprinkles” for our little ones that also happen to pack a nice nutritional punch.

Chia Seeds: Another one of our all-natural “sprinkles” are Farm Boy™ Chia Seeds. These tiny superfoods are chock full of fibre, protein, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. Incorporating them into a healthy snack like this banana sushi is an easy way to enjoy their numerous nutritional benefits.

Banana: A banana is the star of this simple recipe. A peeled and ripe—but not mushy—banana gives the best flavour. For an easier time rolling your sushi, choose a banana that’s a little straighter and less curved.

Other Spread Options

Nut butter or seeds butters don’t have to be the only options to filling up these sushi rolls. Some other spread suggestions are:

Cream Cheese: Fresh and creamy with a little bit of tang, Farm Boy™ Cream Cheese is a less-sweet option for this banana sushi. Made locally with 100% Ontario milk and European fermentation principles, it has a great texture and luscious flavour.

Jam: Swap your peanut butter for one of our Fruit-Filled Jams. You could do an endless assortment of banana sushi rolls using any of our flavours, like Blueberry, Peach, Raspberry, or Strawberry. Pair them with peanut butter, chocolate hazelnut spread, cream cheese, or enjoy them all on their own as a sweet, fruity spread for this simple snack.

Honey: A natural sweetener, a little bit of honey pairs nicely with our peanut butter. Instead of the chocolate hazelnut spread, you could use a smear of honey for some additional sweetness. Our Pure Ontario Liquid Honey comes straight from the hive to the jar for the cleanest taste. (If you’re making this snack for little ones under one, skip the honey.)

Greek Yogurt: A great source of protein, try making these banana sushi rolls with our Organic Plain Greek Yogurt. Made with Ontario milk, it has a thick, creamy texture that’s perfect for spreading. Sweeten it up a bit with the help of our honey or jam for a fresh twist on this healthy snack.

Tahini: Rich and nutty in flavour, tahini is the sushi spread you didn’t know you needed. Full of heart-healthy nutrients, protein, and fibre, Farm Boy™ Tahini is made with 100% roasted and ground sesame seeds—and nothing else. We like it for a not-sweet but still satisfying spread in these banana sushi rolls.

Other Kid-Friendly Toppings

There are plenty of other fun toppings and add-ins to include to make this kid-friendly snack a wholesome dessert. Choose your favourites or mix and match for a banana sushi bar!

Sprinkles: Sprinkles make everything more fun, from a bowl of oatmeal to a healthy snack. Add sprinkles on top of the sliced banana sushi rolls, or mix them inside. These are an easy way to add a fun crunch, a colourful surprise, and encourage your kids to try something different. Choose naturally-dyed sprinkles if you want to avoid artificial food colouring.

Mini Chocolate Chips: Whether you’re adding our Chocolate Hazelnut Spread or not, mini chocolate chips are a fun way to add a little extra whimsy to this recipe. You could also try cacao nibs for a similar crunchy texture and natural chocolatey flavour.

Shredded Coconut: Instead of sprinkling shredded coconut on top of these sushi rolls, we suggest rolling it inside. To do this, spread the peanut butter on your tortilla before dusting with shredded coconut. Lay your banana on top at one end, roll it up, and enjoy!

Cereal: For even more crunch, try using crushed up cereal. Opt for unsweetened varieties to keep the sugar content low while still providing a satisfying healthy snack. We like our Gluten Free Crisped Rice Cereal for a familiar flavour and pop of texture both adults and kids will enjoy.

How to Store Banana Sushi

This banana sushi is best served after making it. The banana begins to oxidize and turn brown soon after slicing, so this recipe is at its peak when served and enjoyed immediately.

However, if you want to pack this for school lunches, you have two options. One, you can leave the tortilla uncut. This makes this snack less sushi-roll and more banana hot dog—which is still a win with kids. Option two is to cut the banana sushi rolls and line the pieces up right next to each other. You can then wrap the whole thing in plastic wrap or a reusable beeswax wrap to limit the amount of air that gets at the rolls, which will help them stay tasty.

Tips for Making Banana Sushi

Use a large wrap. You want to use a wrap that’s large enough to wrap around the banana multiple times without the fruit falling out or peeking out at either end. Our 10” tortillas are ideal for this.

Pick a straighter banana. For an easier time rolling, choose a straighter banana when shopping at your local Farm Boy. Pick one that’s ripe but not mushy for the best texture and flavour.

Roll up tightly. You don’t want the banana to fall out of the sushi roll. Be sure to wrap your banana tightly. The nut butter or seed butter you use will also help the banana stick.

Use a serrated knife. For clean pieces of banana sushi, use a serrated knife. This will prevent you from crushing the banana as you cut it, keeping those nice pieces intact.
